Microsoft to improve Xbox Live media search through VideoSurf acquisition

Microsoft has announced that it has inked a deal to acquire video searching startup VideoSurf in a bid to improve searching for entertainment content across its Xbox Live platform. By integrating VideoSurf’s technology, users will be able to search for a term (say, “Spider-Man”) and pull up unified results across games, the Zune marketplace, TV and film entertainment, and potentially even entertainment content from third-party providers like Netflix, Hulu, or Comcast.
“VideoSurf’s content analytics technology will enhance the search and discovery of entertainment content across our platform,” said the director for Xbox Live’s interactive entertainment business Alex Garden, in a statement. “This holiday we will launch voice search across our entertainment partners on Xbox LIVE. Over time, as we integrate VideoSurf’s technology into our system, we are excited about the potential to have content tagged in real time to increase the speed and relevance of the search results.”
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed; industry sources put the value of the deal in the $75 million range, but TechCrunch reports the acquisition totalled up to $100 million in cash.
VideoSurf’s technology does more than peer inside videos, assemble key frames, and associate tags with them: it also uses audio and facial recognition technology to automatically tag video content, so searching for “Alec Baldwin” won’t just turn up hits where the actor is in the cast of a production, but will also turn up interviews or just places he’s mentioned without being specifically credited. Microsoft hopes the technology will enable the company to offer a comprehensive, searchable overview of video content—a service that will become increasingly important as Microsoft lines up more and more large-scale and independent content providers for XBox Live. Microsoft says it’s adding more than 40 “world-leading” TV and entertainment providers to Xbox Live in the “coming months.”
VideoSurf was founded by four Israeli entrepreneurs, and backed by a notable tema of investors, including Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg (and her husband David Goldberg, CEO of SurveyMOnkey), along with former Vice President (and current Apple board member) Al Gore.

Algeria in talks with Vimpelcom over Djezzy

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria is in talks with Vimpelcom aimed at resolving a tug of war over the Russian telecoms group's mobile phone unit Djezzy and efforts to find a resolution could now speed up, according to Algeria's finance minister, Karim Djoudi.
Vimpelcom hoped to acquire Djezzy as part of a planned $6 billion acquisition of Wind Telecom, parent of Djezzy's owner Orascom Telecom. But Djezzy's status was left unclear after Algeria said it wanted to take the business over itself.
Djoudi's comments were the strongest hint yet that a resolution could be close after more than a year of deadlock over Djezzy, which had been the most lucrative part of Orascom Telecom's business.
Asked about Djezzy, Djoudi said: "Things are taking place normally. I have had a meeting with a Vimpelcom representative at his request. Unfortunately, I cannot give you details because we are in talks."
He said a valuation of Djezzy, a crucial step in determining the unit's future, was proceeding. "It is possible that things will go fast," Djoudi said. "There is a willingness on the other side to make things go fast."
It remains unclear what shape a deal on Djezzy could take. There has been some speculation that the Algerian government could acquire a 51 percent stake and allow Vimpelcom to hold the remaining equity and be the operator.
Before the Vimpelcom deal, Orascom Telecom was forced to agree to talks on Djezzy's nationalisation after it was hit with millions of dollars in back-tax demands from Algeria and prevented from moving the unit's cash abroad.
Talks about the nationalisation had been stalled because of a dispute between the Algerian government and Djezzy's owners about how the unit is to be valued, and how much access the owners would provide to Djezzy's balance sheet.
Djoudi suggested that issue had now been resolved. "We have opened the data room which gives us access to all ... (Djezzy's) details," he said.

Fresh Android Apps for Nov. 14: Cocktail Flow Tablet, ZeroPC, Defender, Space Station: Frontier

The coming holidays mean time with family and friends, parties, and for many, cocktails. Learn how to master your mixology with Cocktail Flow.
For browsing across online storage services, try ZeroPC Cloud Navigator, and when its time for play download Defender and Space Station: Frontier.

Cocktail Flow Tablet ($2.99)

Need a drink? Who doesn’t? It’s been a rough Fall. Fortunately, whether you have a phone or a tablet, there’s a version of this cocktail app for your device.
The instructions don’t expect you to have the knowledge of a bartender. Instead of starting with fancy pants names of cocktails, the app lets you pick the base alcohol you have on hand, and lets you build something from there. Missing ingredients? Choose an alternative drink made from the stuff in your pantry or liquor cabinet.
This app already ranks high in the Windows Marketplace and the first Android reviews say it’s tasty.

ZeroPC Cloud Navigator HD (Free)

The creators of this app understand the current state of affairs in cloud storage. They know many storage services offer a certain amount of storage for free and only charge for additional storage and enhanced features. These means an individual may use the free storage from more than one service, in order to maximize the free stuff. Those people could use an easy way to access all of these storage services. Enter ZeroPC Cloud Navigator HD.
Browse and search across many key services including Dropbox, Box.net, Evernote, Google Docs, Facebook, and others. You can even search your friend’s account if they give you permission. Explore new services you don’t currently use right from this app.
The creators promise upcoming features like local cache, file uploading, and quick sharing.

Defender (Free)

Medieval monsters really want entry into your castle. They sacrifice themselves in wave after wave and will keep coming. You’ll need a lot of arrows.
Aim the arrows of your tireless archer by tapping your device screen. Fortunately, you can also shoot in automatic mode like an assault rifle by dragging your finger. Still, this may not be enough to stop the enemy, so you’ll need to fling magic spells – like lightning and fire from the sky – to defend the castle.
Leveling-up brings tougher opponents and weapons for your soldiers more deadly than arrows, including flamethrowers and cannons.

Space Station: Frontier ($1.99)

Tower Defense – in space! From the makers of the popular Sentinel game series comes a deep space defense challenge. Add nodes to your space station in order to prepare for alien attack, just like you would in medieval-themed tower defense games. Pick new weapons from the space tech store if you can afford them.
Balance your arms race against the need to gather more resources to power your station. Build additions to your station right during an attack. And, check the leaderboards or find out who else plays via the app. Out of this world graphics!

Amazon, Microsoft catch on, BlackBerry falls: survey

(Reuters) - Amazon.com's Kindle Fire tablet and Microsoft's efforts to get back into the mobile game have impressed developers, a survey released on Monday showed, while BlackBerry maker Research In Motion fell further behind.
Mobile software developers remain enamored with Apple's iPhone and iPad and, to a lesser extent, devices using Google's Android software, according to the survey from researcher IDC and Appcelerator, a company that works with app developers.
But in the second-tier, Microsoft's partnership with Nokia helped it break ahead of BlackBerry maker RIM.
"Amazon and Microsoft are the two big movers as we head into 2012," Appcelerator's head of marketing Scott Schwarzhoff said in an interview. "RIM continues to face challenges, especially on the PlayBook," its tablet which has sold poorly.
Amazon's Fire uses a variation of Android, but developers were most interested in its low cost and rich content library.
"It has all the trappings of the next big thing," Schwarzhoff said, pointing out that interest in the tablet, which is due to ship on Tuesday, is only slightly lower than the pre-launch interest in Apple's iPad.
Developers reporting they are "very interested" in RIM's operating system for its BlackBerry smartphones dropped 7 percentage points to 21 percent and its QNX-based PlayBook tablet dropped 6 points to 13 percent.
By contrast, Microsoft added 8 points to 38 percent.
That is, the survey showed more developer interest in Nokia's new Lumia Windows Phone lineup than RIM's smartphones.
The dismal reading for RIM was blamed on lack of clarity on future direction, despite the Canadian company in October setting out a unified platform for future tablets and phones.
"Time is not really on RIM's side right now, certainly that is the perception," Schwarzhoff said.
The number of respondents who said they were very interested in developing for the iPhone and iPad was constant at 91 and 88 percent, respectively. Android for phones dipped slightly to 83 percent and Android tablets slipped to 68 percent.
The survey of 2,160 developers was conducted on November 2-3. The full report can be found here: http://r.reuters.com/huh94sat

Ipod Touch to Iphone

Oh sure, VoIP on the iPod touch is hardly breaking news these days, but what if you could actually slap on a regular SIM card and make calls on said device? That's what Yosion's appropriately named Apple Peel 520 claims to do. Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, this adapter not only offers voice calling and text messaging (presumably requiring a jailbroken iPod touch for the apps; GPRS not possible yet), but it also doubles up as an 800mAh battery and provides 4.5 hours of call time or 120 hours of standby juice. We're told this cheeky hack's coming out in China as early as this week for somewhere between ¥300 ($44) and ¥500 ($74), although the lack of an official website, full spec sheet or compatibility list means we'll have to remain skeptical with this potentially vaporware company.

GTA 5 Digital Only

In a new report covering DLC, pre-owned and digital distribution, which was passed along to IndustryGamers, CEO Peter Warman said: "There are a lot of reasons why publishers are pushing towards digital distribution of triple-A games. "Speaking out loud might harm the relationship with retail partners, but the benefits have become too large to remain silent about the desire to go completely digital. The ultimate objective being to launch games faster, create continuous revenues on a title and simply to make more money. "Will retail disappear from the picture? Of course not," he continued. "Retail will always remain an important channel to promote and distribute games. Retail has a strong hand to play when it comes to eyeballs and... boxes make a nice gift. "Boxed games will not disappear, but what is in the box will. That is why the boxed GTA V version will contain a collectible piece of merchandise and a download code. No disc." Would you be happy for GTA V to be a download only title, or do you still love having your games on a physical disc?

Konami announced last september that it is developing a new entry in the Suikoden RPG series. The new game is titled Genso Suikoden Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki and is in development for the PSP.
The announcement came at a Tokyo Game Show stage event for tri-Ace's Frontier Gate. Konami quickly opened a teaser site for the game, containing a trailer, which you can see here.

Play Diablo 3 now!! :D

Diablo 3 Beta with Patch 5:

Image
Part1
Part2
Part3
Part4
Part5
Part6

After downloading the game, extract it to C:\Program Files\ (if you have an 32-bit operating system) or C:\Program Files (x86)\ (if you have an 64-bit operating system).

After the extraction, it should look like this:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo III Beta\game files.

Make sure it's not:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo III Beta\Diablo III Beta\game files.

If you skip this step or not do it as I said, the batch file you're going to create(in tutorial) won't work and you won't be able to play the game.

About Mooext which you are about to download:

IMPORTANT-1!: Firstly, this is an emulator, not a crack. This emulator is in progress and not final yet. It's at the very beginning stages so this emulator does not reflect the full beta. Why? Read on. Basically, this emulator is built to mimic battle.net servers. Normally, when you enter the beta with a key from blizzard, all of the npc's, skills, mobs, shrines, chests, etc... comes from the server. If there were no connection(which is not possible) there would only be an empty map. Sadly, everything has to be done from the beginning. This is a hard work that needs to be respected, and can take very long to complete. Most of the features are limited or not active yet. So, download knowing these and don't say anything like "this sucks", "there'll be no crack". I started this thread for people wanting to reach new versions of the emulator quickly as possible to see the development or to see a little portion of the game. You'll be noticed here if this emulator becomes final someday.

IMPORTANT-2!: Mooege is the name of the emulator, and Mooext(which you're about to download) is a user-friendly utility which auto-updates and auto-compiles Mooege making it way easier to play the beta.

IMPORTANT-3!:If you update using Mooext and see that some feature existed before doesn't exist now, that means there are some problems with it and is removed in the new version. Can be added later, or not. This happened many times in early builds.

IMPORTANT-4!: This is not my project. Raistlinthewizz started this project and there are many developers helping him/her now. So If you want to contribute, don't ask me. Ask here:

Step 1: Install Requirements

If you come from an outside website, delete anything you've done and start from step one. All other guides are incorrect and will cause errors.

Step 2: Open MooExt and Update

Set Path for D3 Game Path
Should be (C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo III Beta\Diablo III.exe) or some close variation
No need to change Mooege Server Path, this will set itself.
Go to Mooege Updates Tab and Click Manual check(F5) <- This is Important! Importante!!

Step 3: Make a Shortcut

Step 4: Batch copy
The easiest thing to do is to use these commands as a batch file. Open Notepad, and copy and paste the code below.

@echo off
rem jm
if exist "C:\users\%username%\appdata\Local\MooExt\Mooege\Assets\MPQ\" goto cleanup
if exist "C:\Program Files\Diablo III Beta" goto copympq
if exist "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo III Beta" goto copympqx86
Echo C:\Program Files\Diablo III Beta folder does not exist, install D3
goto end

:cleanup
Echo existing mpq folder. Cleaning up.
rd /s /q "C:\users\%username%\AppData\Local\MooExt\Mooege\Assets\MPQ\"

:copympq
Echo Copying MPQ files from D3 folder.
xcopy /s /y "C:\Program Files\Diablo III Beta\Data_D3\PC\MPQs\*.*" "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\MooExt\Mooege\Assets\MPQ\"
goto end

:copympqx86
Echo Copying MPQ files from D3 folder in 86x folder.
xcopy /s /y "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo III Beta\Data_D3\PC\MPQs\*.*" "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\MooExt\Mooege\Assets\MPQ\"
goto end

:end

Save File as Mooege.bat, change file type to save as all files. Save this on your Desktop. Before running the batch file, please sure to close out Diablo 3 if you have it already started.

Run the ".bat file" as admin

If the batch files closes out instantly, The File Locations may be CASE-SENSITIVE or you may need to 'run as admin', Please make sure things have proper casing or this will not work!
Image

This will automatically copy from the retail folder into mooege's MPQ. You Must Use this batch file, You are not allowed to link Mooext to the diablo 3 MPQ folder.

Step 5: Time to Play!
You Should have two icons on your desktop now, MooExt.exe-Shortcut and Mooege.Bat.

Open Mooext.exe - Shortcut
Press Play(Local)
At Login Screen, Username:(Anything)@(Anything) | Password: (Anything) <- anything means just type something.

Step 6:
If Mooege doesn't work, Delete everything and start at Step 1.

Best Known Question: Why is there no_______ in the game? Why is ____ not working anymore?
At the time of this post, there are no creatures, quests, spells, etc. because of the major overhaul the developers are working on to get everything “under-the-hood” working perfectly. We understand you want to play through Diablo 3 Beta, we all do!! But you’re just going to have to wait until we finish. There is tons of work to be done other than people saying you just need to load monsters and quests and vendors and spells. This isn’t a single-player game with everything already scripted that just needs a crack to work. Everything Blizzard is Server-side, so almost everything needs to be deciphered and recoded to work properly.

In Short for English-Impaired: We are working on it, Be Patient.

I used to be able to spawn monsters, why can’t I now?
Raistlinthewiz/Bonesoul has implemented a Server toon to allow us the use of commands.
Reply to the server by pressing ‘R’ or clicking on the pink brackets when they show up when you are in-game. And type ‘!spawn’. This will spawn 1 zombie.
‘!spawn 10 6652’ is used if you want to spawn 10 zombies(!spawn number SNOid)
There are also other commands by typing !commands (console commands)

Cant Retrieve hero list?
Quick Fix for now: delete the Appdata\mooext folder and on MooExt go to Mooege Updates and reset last commit and manual check, this will recompile a fresh mooege, just remember to fix where the MPQRoot is.

[fatal][program] where in the text says something about Sqlite.dll?
Make sure you have sqlite installed above and removed any other version of sqlite you may have.

Something else wrong in MPQs? (Error 3003)
Update your Diablo 3.

[Fatal] [MPQPatchChain]: Required patch-chain version 7447 is not satified (found version: 7200)
It seems that you still using old version of D3 Client, not the latest (7447). Update diablo, and the batch file should move the folders with updates over to Mooege folder.

I don’t have a username and password to login.
Don’t need one! Just type in anything random as long as you have a ‘@’ sign, ex: 123@123. For a password, anything will do! Ex: 123.

Console says: Could not find Coredata.MPQ/Base-mpq files.
You shouldn’t have a problem if you follow this guide Wink But in case you need a refresher, make sure you’ve used the Batch File, and use it as 'Run as Admin' and 'Case-sensitive folders'.
In other cases, you may have corrupted or outdated MPQs, just update diablo and retrieve new MPQs.

Try going to your Diablo 3 Directory and navigate to the "Diablo III Beta/Data_D3/PC/" folder.
There should be a folder called "MPQs". Right click "MPQs" and click Copy.
Navigate to "C:/Users/[username]/AppData/Local/MooExt/Mooege/Assets". Now right-click and Paste the MPQs folder into the folder you are in (which should be Assets). *note: if you couldnt see AppData folder, try showing hidden folders*.
Okay, now rename the "MPQs" folder to "MPQ" (take off the "s").

Can't get past loading screen?
Same as above you need MPQs in the correct place. Also run Mooext as Admin

Server cant bind to 0.0.0.0?
Mooege is still running in the background, kill it from task manager.

Error_Api_Not_Initalized
Make sure Diablo is up-to-date, delete your MPQ folder in Diablo and update.

Overall Solution to your problems
Make Sure you have all requirements listed above
Update Mooege and set paths correctly
Reinstall/Update Diablo 3
Make Sure you either use MPQ folder(explained in guide) or Move MPQs into Mooege's Asset\MPQ folder
Run Mooext and Diablo 3 as Administrator
Reset Last Commit and Manual Check (In MooExt)
