Sony takes a new angle on PSP Movies

Sony Computer Entertainment is taking another stab at establishing the PlayStation Portable as a film viewing device, by lowering title prices, signing studio deals to license content and making digital copies playable on the handheld system.

When the PSP launched in 2005, all of the major studios were churning out films in the portable console´s Universal Media Disc format. However, games ultimately proved to be far better sellers on PSP, and nearly all the major studios stopped generating UMDs after about one and half years of production. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was the exception.

Although the new release pipeline substantially dried up, PSP owners were still accessing films. But they were mostly doing so illegally, transferring ripped Web files to their systems. At the same time, studios cannot ignore the PSP´s 13 million U.S. hardware base as the DVD market matures.

"We want to provide a legal offering from the studios, … and it´s an easier conversation to have with them now," said John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "There´s a lot of positive momentum with the PSP."

To make sure consumers buy UMDs this go around, Sony is shaving new release list prices to $9.99 to $14.99. That is $10 to $25 less than UMD initial pricing a few years ago.

To attract studios, Sony Computer is promising to do the bulk of the work with UMDs. Sony will license, manufacture, distribute, market and sell the studios´ films for them for the PSP.

MTV was the first supplier to agree to these terms, which resulted in the bow earlier this year of nine UMDs, spanning seasons of such shows as Viva La Bam and Jackass. A second wave of MTV UMDs should street by the end of the year. Additional studios are expected to announce UMD licensing deals with Sony in the next several months, added Koller.

Sony´s goal is to distribute five to seven studio-licensed UMDs each quarter, not including movies from its sister studio.

Koller said Sony is pleased with MTV UMD sales, believing consumers are drawn in "because it´s getting close to an impulse purchase" in price.

Additionally, Sony wants to release titles that narrowly appeal to young men, who makeup 92% of PSP owners. Its core demographic is the 15- to 17-year-old male teen.

"The biggest issue with UMD was the lack of creating for a targeted demo," said Koller. "When we first launched, it was a difficult sale. I don´t think it´s a big stretch to say that a 16-year-old doesn´t have a lot of discretionary income. … We were offering UMDs that were more expensive than DVDs at the time. And we want content that is in line with what the demo is asking for, action and comedy … not romantic dramas."

SPHE, for instance, has set Prom Night and You Don´t Mess with the Zohan to bow on UMD on Aug. 19 and Oct. 7, respectively.

Best-selling UMDs to date include New Line Home Entertainment´s Wedding Crashers and Sony´s Superbad.

To further enhance PSP´s film capabilities, Sony is courting studios to make DVD digital copies compatible with the handheld system. Today, Sony´s DVD unit is the only studio embedding copies for PSP playback.

"The studios are looking at this and saying, what are the myriad of ways that content can reach all of the various consumer touch points?" said Koller. "They want to grow that consumer base that they have."

At least one studio source indicates they are eager to make its digital copies compatible with PSP so as to prevent Apple from creating a monopoly with its portable media. There is a fear that Apple might grow to be the digital version of Wal-Mart, exerting the same power with studios over downloading/streaming as the bricks-and-mortar chain does with DVD.

Koller is especially confident that studios will sign on to UMD and digital copy because of their recent support of the PlayStation 3 download and streaming service. Since July, most studios have been offering digital film sales and rentals that people can transfer from their PS3 to their PSP. People also can order content directly from PCs at www.store.playstation.com and transfer to a PSP through a USB cable.

Also, Sony licensed Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment´s National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets for a customized hardware/software bundle streeting in October. This Disney UMD will only be available in this bundle, priced at $199, and won´t be sold separately.

"The future of PSP is bright for video because of all the different methods consumers have to enjoy it," Koller said.

Final Fantasy XIII Agito

The revelation that Agito, the former Final Fantasy XIII cell phone game was coming to the PSP was a nice revelation for many. Apparently, the developers were tired of waiting for cellphone to advance to the level they wanted for Agito. While details are far and few between, the latest issue of Famitsu PS3 says that Agito will use an advanced version of Crisis Core's ATB system. Fans of the PSP-exclusive prequel should be familiar with the real-time battle system. However, unlike Crisis Core, players can look forward to controlling more than one character.

Another bonus is the addition of Infrastructure online play to Agito, a rarity for more Japanese-developed titles. Games with community aspects, such as Monster Hunter Portable and Phantasy Star Portable have oped to use Ad-Hoc multiplayer only. Although that hasn't hindered the popularity of either of these games, players across the Pacific understand that Infrastructure makes online play much more accessible.

BioShock Cheats

Cheat: Free Health Packs

While you can buy health packs at health stations for $10, you can get them for free by simply smashing the machines with your wrench. After a few hits, between 1-3 health packs should lie on the floor for you to grab, for free.

Unlockable: Good Ending / Bad Ending
There are two possible endings for BioShock that depend on how you treated little sisters throughout the game. If you choose to "harvest" more than one little sister, you will get the bad BioShock ending. If, however, you "harvest" no more than one little sister but "rescue" the others, you will get the good BioShock ending.

Hint: Big Daddy Battle

In order to do this, you need the Hypnotize Big Daddy Plasmid and the Natural Camouflage Tonic. All you have to do is use the Hypnotize Big Daddy Plasmid on a Big Daddy so that he thinks you're a Little Sister and protects you. Now here's the fun part - simply find and attack another Big Daddy and your Big Daddy will attack it to protect you.

Hint: Sander Cohen

About halfway through the game, you meet Sander Cohen, this crazy artist dude. When you finish the level, you can just leave him or kill him. If you kill him at that point, you can't get one of the Achievements "Find Cohen's Room." A while later you will stumble onto Cohen's apartment. If he's alive, two Splicers will be dancing in the main room, with Cohen watching from his locked private room. Kill the Splicers and then Cohen comes out to fight you, thus unlocking the door and allowing you to earn the Achievement.

Hint: Big Daddy Kills

When fighting a Big Daddy, use armor-piercing rounds, as they will deal considerable damage compared to regular rounds.

Hint: Security Drone Manipulation

Use a blast of the Electric Shock Plasmid to temporarily disable security drones before you do anything else in a room. Then, run up to them within five seconds and hack them! You can hack while the game is on virtual "pause." You'll have security drones on your side for the rest of the time you are in a fight after doing this.

Hint: Big Daddy Kills II

Once you get the Grenade Launcher and the Proximity Mines, this technique can be employed. Find a red fuel tank (all over the place), and cover it with about 6 Proximity Mines or so. Next, use Telekinesis to lift the massive explosive device and hurl it at a Big Daddy. This deals massive damage, leaving you with minimal effort to finish the job. Just be careful not to have the bomb blow up before you get there. (The launcher upgrade that deals no damage to you is a great thing to have just in case.)

Hint: Telekinesis Drop

While using the Telekinesis Plasmid, you can drop the item you are holding instead of throwing it across the room. To do this you must have an item currently being held. Pick up any item, with the Telekinesis Plasmid selected. Using the LT button, keep holding the item, and don’t let go of the LT button.

When you’re ready to drop the item, press the RB button to open your weapons menu, and in the transition of the weapons menu opening, let go of the LT button. Choose your weapon and the item will drop safely to your feet. If done correctly, the item falls at your feet, instead of being thrown, which makes the item easier to find when you need it.

Added by SyrionSyronimus: A simpler way to drop the item you're holding is to just hit 'X'. So, with the Telekinesis Plasmid armed, hold LT to TK something to you. While it's 'in your face', press X to drop it on the ground. No need to switch to weapons.

Hint: Quick Reloads

The following works with both the Crossbow and the Grenade Launcher. While shooting either, you can rapidly reload by pressing the left trigger, then quickly after pressing the right trigger. This will allow you to start shooting without having to wait longer (several seconds) for your weapon to reload. This is especially useful against powerful enemies like Big Daddies.

Hint: Big Daddy Kills III

Here's another technique to take out Big Daddies. Use the Electric Buck on your Shotgun, alternating between the buck and using the Electro Bolt Plasmid every few seconds (which will shock and freeze him in addition to dealing damage). This technique is especially useful on Bouncer class Big Daddies.

Hint: Big Daddy Kills IV

Once you've obtained the Dart Gun, you can try this technique. All that's required is Electrical Trap Darts (4-6 per Big Daddy). Take your 4-6 Trap Darts and line them down a hall or near where you can see a Big Daddy, making sure the path he'll take towards you is amply covered. Once that's done, shoot at the Big Daddy to get his attention and keep him running towards you. He'll run into each dart and kill himself.

Hint: Big Daddy Kills V

If you have Trap Bolts for your Crossbow, you can execute this technique to kill Big Daddies easily. Give yourself about 20 feet (in-game, of course) and shoot your Trap Bolts so they hang between you and the location of the Big Daddy you want to kill. Then shoot a round with another weapon at the Big Daddy to anger it so it comes towards you. It will stumble across the Trap Bolts you've shot and die, since it only takes two of them to take one down.

Hint: Big Daddy Kills VI

Here's another easy method to kill Big Daddies easily. Try using Electric Gel in the Chemical Thrower. It takes about 3/4 of a tank, but the Big Daddy won't be able to move as you shoot and kill him.

Hint: Easy Splicer Kills

For easy Splicer kills, simply use Telekinesis on one to hurl its body at others in the vicinity. This method usually results in a one-hit kill and is especially useful against higher-level Splicers.

Hint: General Tips

* The first Plasmid, and the first weapon you find are the best in the game.
* Zap em and whack em, that's all you need to know.
* Research everything, it's well worth it. The Houdini Splicers are well worth your time since you'll get the most useful Tonic in the game.
* Get over being scared, the enemies aren't that bad.
* Explore every room in every area and you'll get more out of the game.

Gameplay Notes:

For example, the cover system is automatic. If you go up near something that you can take cover behind, James will lean up against it. If you fire off a shot, you'll automatically pop out to take the shot, and then take cover again. It's an extremely fluid mechanic that worked really well during the bits that I was able to play.

The biggest thing and most interesting part of the design is its aiming system. It's neither a total free-aim system where you have to dial in every headshot, nor is it an auto-lock-on system either. Sony Bend calls it "Aim Assist", which only sort of tells the story. In the center of the screen you'll see a box (or the corners of it, anyway). This is your aiming mechanic. Your reticule will automatically target anything inside of this box, which means that while you still need to point towards an enemy, you won't need to perfectly dial in your shots. You can change between targets by quickly tapping any of the face buttons (which are used to aim - the left stick moves and strafes). It sounds weird, but it works incredibly well.

If you would still prefer to manually aim, you can zoom in to an over-the-shoulder view and switch to an entirely free-aim, manual aiming mode. This will actually help when the Chimera are on the run, as the standard aiming will be less accurate as enemies move around.

EA reveals Need for Speed Undercover release date

In a recent press announcement by Electronic Arts, it was revealed that the new installment of the Need for Speed series, Undercover, will arrive on Windows PCs, PlayStation 3s, PlayStation 2s, Xbox 360s, Wiis, DSes, PSPs by November 18 in North America (November 21 in Europe).

And the new action racing game will return the series to its popular racing roots, including segments of police cruiser races and highway battles.

Interestingly, EA has also decided to shift gears for an extra mile and include a new cover babe for Need for Speed Undercover: the Asian-American actress and Hong Kong cinema superstar Maggie Q.

Known for her roles in Naked Weapon, Mission Impossible III, Live Free or Die Hard, and cameos in Around the World in 80 Days and Rush Hour 2, Margaret Denise Quigley will not only grace the action racing game's cover, but also star as Federal Agent Chase Linh in a plot that EA CEO John Riccitiello claims to be inspired by action films such as The Transporter.

Also noted is the announcement of the Need for Speed Undercover's release on the Apple iPhone.
